Supporting long-term community strength

We support long-term community strength by providing economic opportunity, encouraging employee volunteerism, strengthening education and supporting disaster relief.

Economic opportunity and supplier diversity

As an employer of ~47,000 people across more than 70 countries, we provide economic opportunities to communities around the world. We also create business opportunity for thousands of suppliers in more than 120 countries and all 50 United States.

In North America, our Supplier Diversity program is designed to integrate small and diverse businesses into our supply chain. We offer opportunities for historically underutilized populations, including minorities, women, military veterans and others to do business with AbbVie.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 8

  • We host an annual Supplier Diversity and Development Conference for incumbent and prospective suppliers. The conference features interactive workshops on topics such as innovation, growth and brand strategy that help small businesses build their capabilities.
  • Our biennial Supplier Diversity Exchange provides small and diverse suppliers with a unique opportunity to engage directly with AbbVie senior leaders to share perspectives and build collaborative strategies for mutual success.
  • We mentor diverse suppliers in partnership with Diversity Alliance For Science.
  • Through our pro bono environmental health and safety audit program, our environmental health and safety experts provide small and diverse suppliers with complimentary environmental health and safety reviews and feedback.
  • We collaborate with Supplier Diversity Pharmaceutical Forum to sponsor diverse suppliers to attend entrepreneurial education programs.

Employee volunteerism and giving

Serving the Community is one of our fundamental Principles, and AbbVie employees live this Principle by volunteering and giving.

About one quarter of all employees volunteer annually through programs sponsored by the company or the AbbVie Foundation. Many programs focus on education, a philanthropic priority of the company and the Foundation. Click on each of the four images below to read a feature story about the program.

Beyond these programs, individual teams also have specialized pro bono volunteer programs. Read about how our legal team gives their time and talent to assist people seeking asylum in the United States.

AbbVie employees also contribute financially to their communities, often through our U.S. and Puerto Rico employee giving and matching program. For every charitable donation employees make to one of over 1.5 million eligible nonprofits, the AbbVie Foundation matches dollar for dollar up to $5,000.

Strengthening education

Education helps to enable the achievement of many other goals, including health, employment and economic resilience. It’s a foundational part of our research-based enterprise and a philanthropic priority for AbbVie and the AbbVie Foundation.

In 2018, we made historic contributions to four nonprofit organizations striving to make long-term impacts on education in the United States.

Communities In Schools, City Year, the University of Chicago Education Lab, and North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 will use support from AbbVie to improve educational support for students in underserved communities. Read more.

These donations were part of AbbVie’s broader philanthropic activities in 2018. See the impact we’re creating for families, students and communities with $350 million in donations to U.S. nonprofits.

Supporting disaster relief

Natural disasters have a great impact on communities, from injury, illness and death to homelessness and economic loss.

Since 2013, AbbVie and the AbbVie Foundation have provided more than $20 million in cash grants and medicine donations in disaster-stricken areas. Overall, our disaster relief program has helped communities impacted by over 40 disasters in more than 25 countries.
