Operate Responsibly

Our values define how we operate our business and design our strategies. These values include being a globally responsible business and partner. We commit to cultivate an ethical and transparent culture to drive sustainable growth.

AbbVie is committed to holding ourselves to the highest standards of honesty, fairness and integrity.

We treat our employees, partners, and suppliers with dignity and respect. Our Code of Business Conduct describes our company’s expectations of every employee, and provides guidance and direction for our efforts.

All AbbVie suppliers are expected to understand and comply with our AbbVie Supplier Guidelines. AbbVie works within standards set by federal, state, and industry regulations and is committed to having business relationships with suppliers who share the company’s dedication to conducting business in a legal and
ethical manner.

AbbVie is committed to collaborating with healthcare professionals to improve patient health across the globe. The information exchanged through these relationships has led to newer and better therapies and, most importantly, enhanced care for patients.

TRANSPARENCY & POLICIES

AbbVie is committed to quality, both of our products and in our workplace.

AbbVie is committed to the highest quality products for patients who use them. We aim for the safe and efficient production of our medicines. All of our manufacturing facilities adhere to strict Good Manufacturing Practices standards (GMP) to safeguard quality and supply of our products. Our sites are approved by their respective national health authorities, with many also receiving approvals by international health organizations including WHO and FDA. We ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate to their intended use and as required by the Market Authorization. Our global product protection team constantly analyzes our supply chain to prevent counterfeit or diverted products from reaching patients, while our product packaging includes overt and covert features to help patients clearly identify authentic product and help testing labs authenticate.

In the workplace, AbbVie’s Environmental Health and Safety Culture program — “Zero. Believe It. Achieve It.” — is designed to encourage employees to identify and mitigate safety risks both on and off the job. Our goal is to achieve an absolute 20 percent reduction in recordable incidents by 2020 over a 2013 baseline. Our workplace safety commitment extends to fleet safety, with two policies that aim to ensure safe driving and vehicle operation both at work and at home.

AbbVie is committed to reducing environmental impact, while managing costs and maintaining continuity of supply. Our Global Sustainable Supply Chain program aims to help employees implement environmentally-responsible decisions with suppliers, and also monitor progress of key suppliers in implementing and adhering to their own sustainability programs. We measure and report progress annually.

In 2014, AbbVie’s Supplier Sustainability Survey found 30 percent of key suppliers to be sustainable. Our goal is to work with key suppliers so that 65 percent are designated sustainable in 2015 and 100 percent by 2017.

A critical component of our Sustainable Supply Chain program involves collaboration with key suppliers to deliver mutual benefits, including environmental footprint reductions, cost reductions and other efficiencies. For example, in 2014, AbbVie’s packaging and purchasing teams collaborated with a key partner to reduce the size of the corrugate boxes used for the shipment of bulk syringes for one of our most important products. Our internal packaging engineering team determined the specifications for the new corrugate size, while our supplier proposed different options to meet the new configuration. This change effectively reduced the number of C-Safe Air Units (environmentally controlled shipping containers). This collaboration resulted in approximately $400,000 in annual cost savings.

Supply Chain Management

At AbbVie, we succeed as a business and corporate citizen because of quality supplier partners who share our commitment to elevating patient care around the world. We purchase goods and services from more than 17,000 suppliers. These suppliers help us address some of the world's most pressing health challenges. They share our commitment to innovation. We work with our supplier network to ensure quality, compliance, and social responsibility. We communicate and work with them regularly, monitoring and helping them enhance performance based on our well-defined, stringent metrics. Learn more »

Restricted Substances Management

AbbVie complies with global chemical regulations for purchased chemicals, mixtures and parts. Through our Restricted Substances Management program, we conduct annual reviews to monitor presence of newly identified chemicals of concern, and assess any changes to purchased material composition. We are developing scalable processes and systems in anticipation of future regulations or changes.

C-TPAT Program

AbbVie is committed to ensuring the security of its supply chain and will communicate and verify the security guidelines of its suppliers. The C-TPAT Program focuses on facilities, suppliers and transportation service providers who ship product from a location outside the United States to an AbbVie U.S. operation. AbbVie measures suppliers’ security measures using a detailed questionnaire and suppliers sign a Memorandum of Understanding for adherence to AbbVie’s supply chain security standards. Suppliers whose security practices fail to meet AbbVie Minimum Acceptable Security Level must implement improvements and/or corrective actions before they are allowed to conduct business with AbbVie.

AbbVie is committed to ethical research in all aspects of our business. We maintain the highest standards of clinical practice in all of our research, including bioethics, clinical trial conduct, new technology use, and animal welfare. Read all our responsible research policies and commitments.

We conduct our business in accordance with the highest standards of bioethics, and promote bioethical practices and procedures. AbbVie's bioethical principles are consistent with the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki.

Our biomedical principles are part of our strict corporate policies, and focus on responsible pharmaceutical research including safeguarding volunteers and patients who participate in clinical trials. We adhere to our strict principles and policies – even when local law stipulates a less robust approach. AbbVie has high standards of quality, safety and transparency at all stages, in all countries where we conduct trials. AbbVie is committed to ensuring the humane care and use of laboratory animals in the company’s research and development programs. We recognize that high quality science and humane animal care are inseparable. AbbVie’s laboratory animal research programs and facilities meet and consistently exceed United States and European Union regulations, as well as those in other countries, as applicable. AbbVie voluntarily sought and maintains accreditation from Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) for all animal programs. For outsourced studies, we preferentially work with contract laboratories accredited by AAALAC and/or we perform welfare assessments to assure they meet our high standards for animal care and use.

While animal testing remains part of advancing healthcare research, AbbVie works to minimize the number of tests by using new methods and programs that minimize the need for animal participation. We are committed to internationally-accepted standard of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). The AbbVie Alternatives Committee leads this effort and its annual internal awards promote significant contribution to improving welfare of laboratory animals. AbbVie's Global Animal Welfare Committee guides our policies on animal use, and our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees serve as review boards to independently evaluate and approve scientific protocols. Non-affiliated members from the community comprise 20 percent of this committee to represent the public view.

Our environmental stewardship initiatives help protect the planet while improving efficiency, reducing costs and preserving our ability to do business in the future. AbbVie works diligently to ensure environmental stewardship across our value chain – from the sourcing of raw materials, to the manufacture and distribution of our products, to the use and disposal of our products by consumers and health care providers.

We have three environmental priorities:

  • Climate change
  • Water usage
  • Waste management and product stewardship

We recognize the interrelated nature of these three priorities – and we have developed comprehensive management and governance systems to ensure that environmental considerations are fully integrated into our day-to-day planning and business processes. We also work closely with our suppliers to ensure that they share our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Our environmental commitments for 2015 include:

  • Improving data collection among our commercial affiliates to enhance current understanding of our total environmental footprint, and to prioritize local sustainability projects
  • Expanding our current portfolio of ISO-certified facilities – currently, four sites are ISO 14001, three sites are ISO 50001 and one site is EMAS certified
  • Implementing additional energy Key Performance Indicators to further reduce our CO2e footprint

Climate Change

AbbVie has a comprehensive environmental management program aimed at reducing our emissions from each of these sources. We work across the value chain to reduce our carbon emissions, and we encourage our suppliers, distributors, and other stakeholders to reduce their impact as well. Learn more »

Water Usage

Water is the essence of life – and from a business standpoint, water is an essential raw material for a wide range of our products. Every day, our operations rely on water for manufacturing medicines that patients need. As global concern about water scarcity continues to rise, it has become increasingly important for AbbVie to safeguard this vital resource.

Waste Management and Product Stewardship

AbbVie is committed to responsible product stewardship – including appropriate management and control of waste. Our product stewardship strategy is rooted in efforts to analyze, understand and continually improve life cycle environmental profile of our medicines – from the raw materials and ingredients procured for operations, through product distribution, end use, and management of product residuals. Wastes from our sophisticated manufacturing processes must be carefully managed to ensure safe disposal. Learn more »
