PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IS OUR CORE

AbbVie's strong legacy of innovation serves as the foundation for our research and development work. We bring deep expertise and passion to our work addressing numerous health challenges facing both developed and developing nations around the world.
AbbVie's Entrepreneurial Approach

An Entrepreneurial Approach

AbbVie invests in new research, technologies and approaches with an entrepreneurial eye. We are breaking new ground in the research of hepatitis C, neuroscience, immunology, oncology, and other complex disease areas where unmet clinical need continues to exist.

CREATING A BALANCED R&D PORTFOLIO

We focus our R&D resources where they have the greatest impact on patients and we continually look for opportunities to increase the efficiency of our R&D program. Knowing that only about one in 10,000 pharmaceutical compounds move from the lab into the marketplace, and only one in 12 of the compounds entering clinical trials ultimately reach patients, we take a broad-based approach to our product pipeline. As early as possible, we determine which therapies are the most promising and deserve accelerated development, while also determining which projects are less promising and ought to be abandoned. This approach allows us to be as efficient as possible with our resources.

Adaptive clinical trials make clinical trials smarter, faster, and more efficient, greatly increasing the chance that each patient will receive appropriate doses of medicine. In 2009, we conducted the first adaptive Phase 2 clinical trial in Alzheimer's disease. The trial was designed to establish proof-of-concept and to determine the most effective dose. We now employ similar trial designs across our pipeline.

Increasing R&D Efficiency Through Collaboration

Our commitment to innovation extends beyond our own laboratories. By pursuing the principles of collaboration, balance and efficiency, we can maximize the impact of our research and development work. AbbVie has partnered with many academic institutions, nonprofits, governments, and private companies to combat many of the world's neglected tropical diseases, lending our expertise in disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as the discovery and development of new medicines.

Employee Research Collaboration

Employee Collaboration

AbbVie has multiple opportunities for scientific and technical employees to collaborate. For example, at our Bioresearch Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, we have a roundtable process enabling bench scientists to share day-to-day observations in their laboratories with our R&D leadership and suggest avenues for additional exploration. We also established a global online community enabling AbbVie scientists around the world to exchange ideas and best practices.
