CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITIES

Solving the world’s toughest challenges takes all of us. We are passionate about collaborating with others to do more in our communities. We commit to partnering with our communities to address challenges of the underserved.

AbbVie works with partners to transform education to narrow the achievement gap in science and literacy. We are committed to bringing our resources and expertise to students today, so they are prepared to succeed tomorrow.

In the United States, we’ve committed to help holistically address education challenges in North Chicago, Illinois. In 2014, employees volunteered 6,000 hours in North Chicago to renovate educational spaces, while AbbVie grants support a new math curriculum and vision and hearing screenings.

AbbVie supports U.S. college students through several programs. Since 2011, AbbVie has offered research-focused summer internships to college students to increase awareness and passion for treatment of neglected diseases through experience in our drug discovery laboratory. The AbbVie Foundation also sponsors the Collegiate Inventors Competition. We provide eligible children of AbbVie employees with scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship program.

GLOBAL STEM PROGRAMS

In 2014, the AbbVie Foundation launched SEEK (Science Engineering Exploration Knowledge), a new global STEM education program delivered by AbbVie volunteers. The program has been delivered in Ireland, Japan and North Chicago.

We offer university students the opportunity to work as interns in AbbVie facilities across the globe, providing exposure to careers in scientific research and business. Across Europe, hundreds of university students gain valuable skills and learn about careers in the science industry through internships in our facilities.

In Chittagong, Bangladesh, we partner with the Asian University for Women to educate a new generation of leaders in Asia. The AbbVie Foundation has provided 15 scholarships for students to attend the university, while AbbVie scientists and physicians provide weekly video lectures to students on topics ranging from early molecular modeling to drugs for neglected tropical diseases.

Our employees are committed to their local communities, leveraging their expertise and time to have a remarkable impact.

Recent examples of employee volunteer projects include:

  • Employees in 13 countries volunteered during AbbVie’s signature volunteer initiative, Week of Possibilities, in 2014.

  • 94 percent of U.S. and Puerto Rico-based employees participated in the 2014 annual Employee Giving Campaign. Employees’ donations, combined with the AbbVie Foundation match, provided more than $5.6 million to local communities and charities.
  • In Ireland, AbbVie is partnering with Young Social Innovators to develop national school workshops on innovation and science.
  • Hundreds of employees in Lake County, Illinois, partnered with Direct Relief to assemble emergency care packages for those displaced from their homes due to natural disasters.
  • As part of AbbVie’s commitment to animal welfare, employees volunteer in our Dog Socialization and Play Enrichment program to play and help care for dogs in our animal research facility. Employees undergo training to understand their role and proper handling of dogs, in addition to better understand the use of animals in research. AbbVie is deeply committed to providing the best care for our animals, including adopting eligible dogs. AbbVie has made some former research dogs available for adoption for 16 years through dog adoption agencies.

We seek to do more and to do better by working with stakeholders to improve the world we share. Together, we target unmet needs to support patients across geographies and through their individual journeys. We understand that it takes all of us to create greater access and better outcomes for the health of the world.

AbbVie collaborates with peers, academics, clinical experts and others to take on the most complex health challenges. In Europe, we convene academia, healthcare providers, patients' groups and industry through our Sustainable Healthcare initiative, to find solutions to improve patient care while reducing costs. AbbVie is committed to working closely with healthcare professionals to improve patient health across the globe. Their expertise helps us develop and enhance products and therapies to treat conditions including immunology, oncology, neuroscience and renal disease. The AbbVie Foundation also partners with many organizations to strengthen health systems, education and communities around the world.

One particular focus is leveraging our expertise and collaborating with stakeholders to address neglected tropical diseases and improve standards of care. In 2014, more than 100 of AbbVie’s most experienced scientists contributed 13,500 hours of their expertise to helping solve NTDs through drug development projects, advisory boards and compound screening partner organizations. In addition, we provide a large library of diverse chemicals to screen against many NTDs, and our Executive Council on Neglected Diseases coordinates efforts across the company to contribute innovative technologies, compounds for screening, and our scientific expertise.
