To help advance patient and customer understanding of evolving products and treatments, AbbVie sponsors and collects patient outcome data related to the use of our products, and makes this data easily accessible to health care professionals, payers, regulators, and the public. We offer a wide range of trainings, meetings, conferences, and educational activities targeting multiple stakeholders to help keep our promise of having an impact on people's lives. We also engage in close public-private partnerships to help broaden health care access to critically needed testing and treatment services.
Complementing our partnerships to increase access and promote sustainability, AbbVie provides educational grants to support health care providers with training in key areas, such as reducing the lifetime cost of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and improving patient education for kidney disease. We also support a specialty residency focused on studying and improving health care outcomes.
AbbVie is working with regional, national, and pan-European government agencies to address the changing disease burden and promote more effective and sustainable health care systems. Of the many programs, two are highlighted here: We actively contribute to the European Commission's recently created Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing.
The primary goal is to increase the average healthy life span within the European Union by two years by 2020.
We also are a founding partner and sponsor of the Fit for Work Europe Coalition – a unique multi-stakeholder group dedicated to advancing policies and clinical practices regarding musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The organization's goal is to raise awareness through evidence-based research and recommendations for addressing the burden of MSDs throughout Europe. This is a critical issue because nearly half of all workplace absences and 60 percent of permanent work incapacities in the European Union (EU) are caused by MSDs, and more than a quarter of the EU's working population reports work-related back pain.
